August 7, 1949: William Gargan's 'Martin Kane, Private Eye' Launches

  August 7, 1949: William Gargan 's featured Radio series ‘ Martin Kane, Private Eye ’ was launched on the Mutual radio network during the daytime. Gargan  was a well-known movie star, but was best known as the radio personality, Detective Martin Kane, on the series, 'Private Eye'.  Gargan had an expansive career, but it abruptly ended in 1958, when doctors had to remove his larynx due to throat cancer. He later became a spokesperson for cancer, speaking through an artificial voice box.

August 6, 1928: The First Radio Serials Broadcast

August 6, 1928: NBC broadcast the first serials that was titled "Real Folks". "Real Folks,"was about the “real” daily lives of Matt Thompkins, town mayor, newspaper editor, general store manager, postmaster and band leader, and his wife, Martha, who were surrounded by a cast of “typical” small town characters.  The Real Folks serials was aired every Monday at 9:30 - 10 pm The Real Folks was the first regular series in the history radio broadcast and electronic medium. In the future, radio serials ( radio soap operas ) were a huge impact on bringing fiction into the mainstream. Sadly no radio broadcasts of "Real Folks" are believed to be in existence.
