October 17, 1938: Captain Midnight's debut on Mutual

October 17, 1938: The story about the captain who was fought crime with his single engine plane, was aired for the first time on Mutual.

In Captain Midnight  the main character, Captain Jim "Red" Albright, was a U.S. Army aviator during the First World War.

The code name Captain Midnight was given to him by a General who assigned him to a mission that he was able to complete at exactly 12:00 midnight.

During its run, the show was very popular among many radio listeners, most of whom were adults. It was also the favorite show of U.S. Air Force crews.

    Had a real story of a person who was a Lt. Midnight until he was promoted. Coming back from promotion party, he was challenged by guard -- Of course he answered "Capt. Midnight". The guard didn't fully believe him.

    From the first episode you get the origin of his name. One of my absolute favorite shows along with Hop Harrigan. I also remember doing a radio interview while in the Marines. My subject was a Marine who did have the last name, Marine. I made sure by checking his i.d. card.

February 10: Happy Birthday, Jimmy Durante Actor, personality, voice-over expert and owner of a famous "schnozzola," Jimmy Durante was born on this day in 1893. Jimmy's calling card was his raspy, urbane voice. He hosted the Durante-Moore Show with partner Garry Moore and went solo with The Jimmy Durante Show in 1947. "Dat's my boy dat said dat!" was a catchphrase on the first iteration of the program. Like many shows of the era, The Jimmy Durante Show featured comedy and music. Do you remember guest appearances by: Lucille Ball , Victor Moore, Bing Crosby , and Al Jolson ? After his radio career, Durante voiced the Narrator of the 1969 cartoon special "Frosty the Snowman." He died in Santa Monica on Jan. 29, 1980.
